Salero: The future and the salt flats

The 2015 docudrama Salero details the life of Moises Chambi Yucra and his family, one of the last remaining families of salt gatherers in Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni. Los saleros have farmed Bolivian salt flats for centuries, but the advance of technology has seen the area progress in ways that threaten the opportunity for Moises and co. to make a living in the area. He battles with conflicts with his brother and wife, who both want to live different lives, the former wanting to exploit the tourism industry in the area and the latter hoping to move to one of Bolivia’s large cities.

Film maker Mike Plunkett captures the amazing scenery in the area while delicately telling the family’s story as Moises is faced with a challenging life choice.
